My homelab, Homie. The things I'd otherwise rent from a cloud, running on two machines at home.

See what runs

Self-hosting started as a way to stop paying for the same things every month. It stayed because the data is mine, nothing changes unless I change it, and running it taught me more than any course.

Own the data. Photos, documents and viewing history stay on disks in the house. Backups are mine to plan, and nobody trains anything on them.

No subscriptions. One set of hardware replaces a stack of monthly fees for storage, streaming extras, photo backup and recipe apps.

Learn by running it. Updates, broken containers and DNS are the same problems clients have. Solving them at home first makes me faster at work.

Keep it reachable. Everything that needs to be used outside the house goes through a Cloudflare Tunnel. No ports are open on the router.

Two machines

Storage and apps live apart. Unraid holds the disks and runs the apps as Docker containers. Proxmox runs the things that should keep going when the array is down for maintenance, each in its own virtual machine or container.

Unraid

  • Plex films and series
  • Overseerr, Ombi requests
  • Radarr, Sonarr library, also 4K
  • Immich photos
  • Paperless-ngx documents
  • Mealie recipes
  • InfluxDB sensor history
  • Glance start page

Proxmox

  • Home Assistant the house

What each one replaced

Films and series

Instead of a pile of streaming subscriptions. Plex serves the library to every screen in the house and on the road. Overseerr and Ombi let family ask for something new; Radarr and Sonarr find it and keep the library tidy, with separate 4K libraries.

Photos

Instead of Google Photos. Immich backs up the phones automatically, finds faces and places, and keeps every original at full size on my own disks.

Immich

Paperwork

Instead of a drawer of letters. Paperless-ngx reads every scanned letter, invoice and contract, tags it and makes it searchable. Finding last year's insurance policy takes a search, not an afternoon.

Recipes

Instead of recipe sites full of ads. Mealie imports a recipe from any link, strips the life story, and turns the week's meals into a shopping list.

The house

Instead of an app per device. Home Assistant runs lights, heating and sensors from one place, on Proxmox so it keeps running when Unraid doesn't. InfluxDB keeps the long-term history.

Start page

Instead of a browser full of bookmarks. Glance shows every service, its status and the feeds I follow on one page.

How it's reachable from outside

No open ports.

TunnelOne Cloudflare Tunnel from the house. The connection goes out, so nothing on the router listens for the internet.
HostnamesEach service gets its own name under hoogveld.me. Anything not on the list gets a 404.
InsideAt home everything is reached directly on the network; the tunnel is only for when I'm away.

The hostnames and addresses aren't listed here on purpose. A homelab write-up shouldn't double as a map.
